Borough wide 20mph speed limit
Brenchley Gardens 20mph
We're proposing changes to Brenchley Gardens to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for all road users by providing better facilities for walking, cycling and accessing public transport.
Our proposals for Brenchley Gardens include traffic calming measures such as raised tables and carriageway narrowing, with the added benefit of improving pedestrian crossings and widening footways.
Scheme objectives
The aim of the scheme is to reduce the average speeds on Brenchley Gardens and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

A review was conducted in 2015 and found that speeds on Brenchley Gardens, in both directions, were well above the 20mph speed limit. The average northbound speed is 26.6mph and the average southbound speed is 26.3mph. More details can be found in the scoping report.
The feedback was then used to amend our proposals for approval by the Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and the Climate Emergency.
We consulted on proposals to reduce vehicle speeds in February and March 2020. We asked for feedback from those who use Brenchley Gardens and those who live nearby. We received 21 responses to the consultation which is an 11% response rate and each of the measures were supported by the majority of those who responded.
