Borough wide 20mph speed limit
Forest Hill Road 20mph
As part of Southwark’s 20mph review, road improvement works have been made on Forest Hill Road (eastern end) to reduce motor vehicle speeds and make crossing the road safer.
Scheme objectives
Many vehicles travelling on Forest Hill Road are regularly exceeding 30mph.
We have a duty to make any adjustments necessary to ensure that the law is being upheld and to look after our residents’ safety.
Following consultation with local residents, we made the following improvements to Forest Hill Road:
- raised table west and east of the junction with Brenchley Gardens, with the provision of a pedestrian crossing point
- raised table west of Honour Oak Rise, with no provision of a pedestrian crossing point
- raised table and zebra crossing point, east of Honour Oak Rise to provide a safer crossing location for children at St Francesca Cabrini RC Primary School
Project updates
Final works to resurface Forest Hill Road to install the raised tables and raised zebra crossing.
Consultation summary
From November to December 2018, we asked local residents to comment on the proposed plans and if they had observed any incidents or dangerous situations on Forest Hill Road (FHR). 82% of those who responded answered ‘yes’ to regularly/occasionally.
All proposals received significant support. The majority of incidents reported, as part of this consultation, related to vehicle speeds, finding it hard to exit side roads, and dangers relating to pedestrians crossing FHR due to inadequate/insufficient crossing locations.
As a result of the consultation, no changes to the proposals were recommended. More information can be found below:
