Asylum seekers and refugees
Southwark has a long history of providing sanctuary to asylum seekers and refugees and is also home to a diverse range of migrant communities. Asylum seekers, refugees and other migrant communities face significant barriers to accessing public services, and face specific health and wellbeing challenges as a result of having to leave their countries of origin and travel to the UK in the most difficult of circumstances.
Southwark Public Health together with key partners and stakeholders across the council, NHS and voluntary sector have produced many documents identifying the needs of asylum seekers and the barriers they face to accessing services. Our full JSNA contains nearly 50 recommendations on how to meet the health and wellbeing needs of refugees and asylum seekers in Southwark. These recommendations will support the council in achieving its aspirations to become a Borough of Sanctuary.
