Cancer

Cancers are a leading cause of death in Southwark, accounting for around a quarter of all deaths in 2020, although the percentage of all deaths in the borough with cancer as an underlying cause is decreasing.

The number of cancer cases in Southwark is rising, although it is still lower compared to South East London and England averages. This rising trend is likely to continue in line with the recent increase in older population.

Cancer Research UK (CRUK) has estimated that around four in ten cancer cases are preventable and could be avoided with changes to lifestyle, including moving more, eating well, being a healthy weight, cutting back on alcohol and quitting smoking.

Southwark Public Health together with key partners and stakeholders have produced a number of documents identifying the local population needs. Please note that this list will be updated as and when new information becomes available.
