Air quality projects

Our projects aim to improve air quality.

We do this by raising air quality awareness, and promoting behaviour change that will reduce people’s exposure to poor air quality, and reduce emissions.

'Our Healthy Walworth’ is a Low Emission Neighbourhood (LEN) supported by the Mayor of London. You can read more about the Walworth LEN on the dedicated web page.

Other Southwark air quality projects include:

• Asthma Air Quality Monitoring and Engagement – project for Southwark’s pupils to monitor air quality at home and school and promote awareness and behavioural change
• Anti-Idling 'Engines off Every Stop'  - London wide project asking drivers to turn their engines off when stopped
• delivering the Cleaner Air 4 Schools Toolkit in several primary schools, helping to ensure they have up-to-date green travel plans and taking action to reduce their carbon footprint and energy bills
  • in the academic year 2013/14 six of Southwark’s primary schools were engaged - read the final report ^{(PDF, 3.2mb)}
• test trials of dust suppressants on construction sites ^{(PDF, 2mb)} and Nitrogen Dioxide reducing reactive surface coatings on new developments ^{(PDF, 2.1mb)}
• anti-idling campaigns - Tower Bridge ^{(PDF, 5.9mb)} on major routes to encourage drivers to turn off their engines when stationary
• increase awareness of the issue of poor air quality in Southwark, particularly with those at health risk
• encouraging the uptake of low emission delivery methods by commercial concerns

• the phase one report ^{(PDF, 2mb)} and the phase two report ^{(PDF, 10.6mb)} of the three year project
• Air Quality Impact Evaluation Temporary Road Closures ^{(PDF, 1.3mb)}

Over the past six years the authority has supported the Cross River Partnership’s Clean Air Better Business programme has brought together central London boroughs, BIDs and businesses to support the business sector to reduce emissions and exposure to toxic air pollution.
