Cycle improvements

Rye Lane Cycle Lane Improvements

Rye Lane (between Peckham High Street and Hanover Park) is currently one way north for buses and two way for cyclists under a permanent traffic order. The southbound cycle lane has generated complaints as is it felt by some that it is not clearly defined.

We are currently in the outline design stages of a scheme to address some of the issues raised by residents. The objectives for this scheme are to:

  • improve cycle safety
  • improve street design for those walking, cycling and wheeling
  • assess the COVID-19 Measures that are still in place

Consultation

We are running public consultation until 10 November 2024.

We welcome you to comment on the scheme and give us your thoughts. Your feedback will be used to inform our next stage of design.

Take part in the consultation

Scheme background

Rye Lane (between Hanover Park and Copeland Road) was closed to traffic on 6 July 2020 as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Due to the narrow footway, large numbers of people were unable to safely social distance despite the early action that was taken to increase road space for pedestrians.

Due to concerns raised by residents about how far away the buses were stopping, the road was reopened to buses and bicycles traveling in both directions. This happened on 18 October 2021 under an 18 month experimental traffic order. We were required to undertake a public consultation to assist the decision on whether these measures should be permanent, permanent with modifications or removed.

As part of the consultation, we wanted to gauge the community’s views on a number of different traffic arrangements around loading times and bus routes for Rye Lane. Considering the 1,585 responses received, we decided to:

  • make the two-way bus arrangement on Rye Lane permanent
  • retain loading and unloading for other motor vehicles from 7am to 10am Monday to Sunday
