New Building for Beormund Primary School

Southwark Council will be providing a new building at the former Bellenden School site in Peckham to rehouse Beormund Primary School. Beormund School is currently sited in Bermondsey, and is a specialist school providing support and learning for primary aged pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and will offer an additional outreach class for Key Stage 3 (Year 7) pupils to aid their transition into secondary education.

The council has appointed Cullinan Studio to develop the design for the building since its original planning approval in 2018. The revised scheme provides enhanced spaces and layouts to meet the criteria of the school, as well as achieving targets under the council’s new Climate Change Initiative. These amendments to the design will be submitted as a Section 73 planning application. Details of the design will be shared by the Planning Authority as part of this process and a drop in event will be organised to share the designs with the local community.

The building will accommodate 56 pupils and will provide excellent teaching and learning spaces, as well as specialist rooms for art, drama, music and food tech. As well as delivering the National Curriculum, specialist therapy services are provided to the pupils and the building will enhance this provision.

The building will be energy efficient, minimising pollution, maximising natural materials and will achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating. The design will also maximise connections to nature, natural daylight and meet Net Zero Carbon criteria in terms of energy use and embodied carbon.

It's expected that construction of the building will commence in Spring 2023 and will last approximately 14 months. The council intends to undertake some enabling preparatory works to the site in advance of this.
