Musical instrument tuition and provision

Southwark Music Service

We're proud to be working with our partners in the Southwark Music Hub to maximise the many diverse musical opportunities for those living and learning in Southwark.

Our vibrant Saturday Music Centre at Walworth Academy now incorporates the:

  • Saturday Morning Centre
  • Southwark Creative Orchestra
  • Southwark Schools Orchestra

We fund the Southwark Youth Orchestra, a community orchestra aimed at Grade 5+ players either going to school or living in the boroughs of Southwark.

In collaboration with hub partners, we fund the David Idowu Choir, which is open to young singers aged 13+ & the ‘All About The Band’ rock & pop project.

The Southwark Music Hub Saturday Music School ‘WAX’ provides students with a broadly based music education that serves both to enhance their enjoyment and appreciation of music and to engender a greater understanding of music making in a variety of contexts.

We offer a large variety of instrumental lessons for pupils from school Year 3 and above who are living or attending school in Southwark. Students will need to be at the centre between 9.15 and 12.30 and will receive a combination of instrumental, ensemble, choir, percussion, theory and aural lessons. These lessons are designed to increase pupils’ musical skills and enable children to play with confidence in a variety of settings. When ready and by agreement with your child’s tutor, students can be entered for public examinations, currently provided by The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College London.

No special expertise or experience is required to attend the Saturday Centre, but pupils are expected to commit to attending regularly each Saturday during term time and to do some practice between lessons.

Tuition is available in:

  • brass
  • guitar
  • keyboard
  • percussion
  • piano
  • singing
  • strings
  • woodwind

Group tuition is offered to beginners, with the group size decreasing as the students progress. In addition, students are expected to participate in ensembles, bands, orchestras and choirs.

The Centre for Advanced Training is within the Department for Education’s Music & Dance Scheme. It also plays a part in the Guildhall Young Artists progression routes, from primary education right through to undergraduate and post-graduate studies in music. Auditions are held for Central CYM places.

Applying for tuition

To apply for tuition, visit the Southwark Music Service website or contact your child's school directly.

Purchasing or loaning an instrument

A instrument may be loaned to pupils receiving tuition at the Music Hub’s Saturday Centre. Where tuition is provided by the school, the same loan system may be in place.

Pupils receiving tuition may be able to purchase new instruments without paying the 20% VAT through their school. The pupil or parent selects an instrument and pays the school the discounted amount. The school will then pay the full cost, reclaim the discount and pass the instrument on to the pupil.
