Peckham Townscape Heritage Initiative

Giving Peckham’s buildings a new lease of life

In 2014, Southwark Council was awarded £1.675m by the Heritage Lottery Fund from funds raised by National Lottery players. The funds will contribute to the regeneration of Peckham by repairing and restoring some of the historic buildings in Rye Lane Conservation Area.  

Southwark Council added funds to this grant, creating a common fund totalling £2.3m. The majority of the funding will contribute to the cost of restoration and repair work. Forty-four buildings are eligible for funding. To be awarded a grant, owners and retailers must also make a financial contribution towards the building works.

There's also a sum of £100k to fund a programme of community activities intended to raise awareness of the conservation area and celebrate Peckham’s historic built environment and heritage.

To ensure community engagement in the Peckham Townscape Heritage Initiative, a stakeholder group has been established. This group, called the Peckham Heritage Regeneration Partnership (PHRP), includes local groups including the Peckham Society, Peckham Vision, Peckham Platform, Pempeople and the South London Gallery, as well as the elected Councillor, Cleo Soanes. The PHRP also includes members of the local community who contribute knowledge and passion about Peckham’s local history, architecture and community activities.

The PHRP have set up a dedicated website for all matters concerning the Peckham Townscape Heritage Initiative. The website includes information for owners and retailers about the process for accessing funding, documents about the Rye Lane Conservation Area and news about community events funded by the PHRP.

The Peckham Townscape Heritage Initiative is one of dozens of Townscape Heritage Initiatives (THIs) funded throughout the country by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
