Area character studies
An area character study looks at the physical and socio-economic data of a defined area. It looks at the experience of those who live, work and visit that area. It also looks at how the area has changed over time, and how it might change in the future. This initial assessment is used to identify areas with a consistent character. These are called character areas. Character areas can vary in size. Sometimes they will be the size of a few streets, and sometimes an entire neighbourhood may have a consistent character.
We explore these character areas in more detail and look at building uses, architectural character, open space, movement and local landmarks. We identify and report positive aspects of the area’s character and opportunities for improvement.
