Find a tree surgeon

If you're thinking about having work done on a tree in your garden, it's wise to get expert advice. You should read our tree preservation orders and conservation areas page first to make sure you are acting legally.

The Arboricultural Association website also has a list of approved contractors that covers the whole of the UK. The contractors are examined for safe working practices and technical competence consistent with British Standard 3998. Contractors should have satisfactory third party liability insurance and professional indemnity insurance. Before entering into a contractual agreement, you should insist on seeing a current receipt in respect of insurance premium.

The work undertaken by the approved contractors includes:

  • maintenance advice
  • planting
  • tree pruning
  • cable bracing
  • pest and disease control
  • felling of trees in difficult positions
