Limesford Road wall
Repair work to the Nunhead Cemetery boundary wall along Limesford Road commenced on Monday 10 June. The construction works are programmed to be completed, subject to delays, on 11 April 2025.
Construction programme
The construction works are split into 2 phases to reduce the work's effect on the traffic on Limesford Road, Borland Road, and Iverton Road.
The works include the following:
- Reducing the height of the existing cemetery boundary wall to ground level within the cemetery.
- The lower half of the existing wall will be retained to protect graves and trees within the cemetery. It will also act as a barrier to tree roots.
- Installing a retaining wall that matches the existing wall's brick, style and construction.
- The new wall will be built immediately in front of the existing wall to provide added support and reduce the risk of its collapse onto the pavement and road.
- The new wall will be built on the highway with reinforced concrete cantilever footings and foundations.
- Main works will be delivered outside the cemetery to ensure no disturbance of historic graves and minimise damage to trees within the cemetery.
The contractor has commenced Phase 1 of the works. This will cover the wall from the entrance of Nunhead Cemetery to the Brockley footpath. Phase 2 of the works will cover the length of the wall from the entrance to Ivedale Road.
