UK's largest community investment scheme for green projects relaunches

11 September 2024

Southwark Council is proud to announce the next phase of its ambitious community investment scheme, aiming to raise an additional £500,000 toward its goal of £6 million by 2030.

The funds will support a wide range of innovative environmental initiatives designed to reduce waste, tackle climate change, and protect Southwark’s green spaces.

Building on the success of last year’s £1 million fundraising round, this phase of the Southwark Green Investment initiative will focus on several key projects:

  • Exploring the expansion of the Library of Things to new parts of the borough, reducing waste and helping residents save money by borrowing items instead of buying them.
  • Investing in nature projects that protect and enhance Southwark’s green spaces, providing vital habitats for plants and wildlife.
  • Investment in green drainage projects, such as rain gardens, to combat flooding and improve water management across the borough.
  • A major green upgrade to Camberwell Cemeteries and Crematorium, ensuring these spaces are sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Councillor Emily Hickson, Deputy Cabinet Member for Green Finance, said: "Our first round exceeded all expectations and showed a strong desire from the community to support environmental improvements, while also earning a fair return. We’re grateful for the support and look forward to building on the success this time around. Together, we can make a real difference in tackling the climate emergency and enhancing the quality of life in Southwark."

Southwark Green Investment, also known as a Community Municipal Investment (CMI), offers residents and businesses the chance to invest in green projects while earning a fixed annual return of 4% for 5 years. Starting with as little as £5, anyone can invest and support Southwark’s green future, regardless of residency.

The funding process is managed by Abundance Investment, a leading platform for ethical and sustainable investments. The returns will be distributed biannually into investors' Abundance accounts, providing flexibility to withdraw or reinvest.

The first phase of the scheme raised £1 million and was used to fund vital projects like cycle hangars, LED street lighting, and green upgrades to local schools and leisure centres. This next £500,000 raise will bring Southwark one step closer to its £6 million target by 2030, with each pound invested driving real, positive change in the community.
