Statement from Cllr Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, on the conflict in the Middle East, one year after the 7 October attacks

7 October 2024

Cllr Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, said: "After a year of escalating violence and conflict in the Middle East, the whole world continues to experience grief, shock and great concern.

“The loss of life and suffering is deeply felt in our communities, especially among families and friends of all those living in Israel, Palestine and Lebanon.

“In Southwark, our thoughts are with everyone watching in horror and sadness as these appalling events unfold.

“Southwark Council will keep working with local communities to support anyone affected, and will continue working closely with police to give reassurance. We will not tolerate hate or violence on our streets and remain vigilant for antisemitism, Islamophobia and far-right activity.

“We continue to call on the Government to do all it can to secure a ceasefire, an end to violence, and a just peace.

“Our close-knit communities stand together in rejection of violence, hatred, conflict and racism and we reassure all our residents that we are here for them and stand with them.”
