Streets for People: the largest engagement exercise run by Southwark Council

73% of Southwark residents are worried about the effects of climate change and 72% about the impact of poor air quality on children, according to a new survey.

Over 9,000 people have given Southwark Council their views, as part of its Streets for People work, making this is the largest engagement exercise the council has ever run.

Cllr James McAsh, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency, Clean Air and Streets, said: “I would like to thank all the residents who have taken the time to talk to us and give us their views. It’s essential that we understand what is most important to the people who live here in Southwark.

“We are addressing their concerns about climate change and air quality through our Streets for People strategy. We want our residents to be able to take safe and healthy journeys, and more green space for all of our communities to socialise and play. We’re improving walking and cycling routes to schools; creating more opportunities to walk and cycle; investing in our community spaces making them safer, greener and more pleasant environments.”

The survey asked residents what their priorities are and what they want to see in their streets and neighbourhoods. The top priorities identified were: more trees and green space; more accessible pavements, less traffic; better lighting; traffic calming; segregated cycling; cycle hangars and pedestrian crossings.

Feedback is now being analysed in detail, and will be used to help the council develop a street-by-street plan, guiding measures such as where we will plant new trees, widen pavements etc.
