Southwark Council has finished building 229 new council homes, a new community centre and a playground on the Aylesbury Estate in Walworth. The council has also created a new public square on Westmoreland Road and tree lined streets as part of this development.

The new homes include some specialist housing, made up of 54 extra care homes for older people and seven homes for people with learning disabilities. This type of housing is specially designed to cater to people’s needs and means the council can support more people to live independently.

This development is just one phase of the wider redevelopment of the Aylesbury Estate which is being managed by Southwark Council. The total redevelopment will see 3,575 new homes and 7,800 sqm of employment, retail, healthcare and community spaces built over the coming years. Southwark Council’s Aylesbury Estate Masterplan aims to create new neighbourhoods which are integrated into the wider network of streets and spaces in Walworth.

Cllr Helen Dennis, Southwark’s Cabinet Member for New Homes and Sustainable Development, said “I’m thrilled to see this first phase of high-quality brand new council homes completed and handed over, with residents already starting to move in. I’m also delighted to see this wonderful spacious new community centre which can support a range of activities and will be a real asset for local people.

“The Aylesbury Estate is one of our largest council estates in the borough and the redevelopment here, with new council housing at its heart, underlines our commitment to existing and future Walworth residents. It’s fantastic to see such a huge progress milestone reached, with new quality council homes, including for those with extra care needs. In addition, the new community facilities, both here and across the redevelopment, will provide people young and old, with a great range of opportunities and activities.”

Southwark Council is also building another 352 new council homes in another site on the estate. The first of these homes are expected to be finished in spring 2024 with the development completed by autumn 2025.
