Health roadshows hit Southwark this summer

16 June 2023

A new series of health roadshows are being run across the borough by Southwark Council, the Southwark NHS team, and other local organisations as Partnership Southwark.

There will be a range of advice across all the free events, where you’ll be able to:

  • speak to health professionals about your own wellbeing
  • find out about preventing, and managing long term conditions such as diabetes
  • get advice on local screening for breast, bowel, cervical and lung cancer
  • find out about local services that can help you, including leisure centres
  • get your blood pressure and weight checked

Free events in different parks and high footfall locations will run until March 2024 with support from a health and wellbeing van.

The pilot project is led by public health staff from the council and clinical experts from the Southwark NHS team. Community Health Ambassadors and volunteers from local organisations will also be on hand to lend their support at some events.

The aim is to help residents understand their health and the steps they can take to look after themselves, from vaccinations to self-care.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “We are bringing health and wellbeing support direct to our residents right in the heart of our communities. Our health roadshows are about empowering people with information and advice so they know how to take control of their health needs and stay well. All events are free with a chance to gain real insight into your health and where you can seek help.”

Dr Nancy Kuchemann, GP and Co-Chair Partnership Southwark, said: “We are excited to get out into the community and make it easier for people to obtain health and wellbeing support and advice. Do come across and talk with our team. There will be people available to offer blood pressure checks, health advice and any information around childhood vaccinations. This is a great opportunity to find out more without needing to make an appointment.”
