New green energy advice centre opens for Southwark residents

28 February 2023

Homeowners in Southwark can now get free advice on the best ways to make their properties greener and more energy efficient with the launch of a new, free service.

Southwark Council has joined forces with London South Bank University to launch the LSBU Energy Advice Centre.

The free service is providing green homes advice and information on things such as home improvements, retrofitting, and grants and funding for green upgrades. It can also give you advice on energy efficiency around the home – such as tips to get more out of your central heating, or guidance on whether you should change to LED lightbulbs.

Speaking during a visit to the Advice Centre, Councillor James McAsh, Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency, said: “Making green improvements to your home can be incredibly complicated and frustrating for residents. That’s why it’s so exciting to launch this partnership, which will help homeowners overcome some of these obstacles and make informed steps to making their homes greener and lower carbon.

“By working with LSBU to deliver this free green homes advice service, we are combining expertise from the Council with Southwark’s incredible engineering and retrofit expertise at the Net Zero Building Centre.”

LSBU Energy Advice Centre Technical Director, Henrique Lagoeiro, added: "We are pleased to be teaming up with Southwark Council in a collaboration that will help to increase our reach across the borough. As a university we have an important role in supporting our community, especially at a time when rising energy bills are putting so many people under stress."

Residents can get free advice online via www.southwark.gov.uk/green-homes-advice  or visit in person by going to the Energy Advice Centre, between 10am and 1pm on Thursdays, at Clarence Centre for Enterprise and Innovation, 126 London Road, Southwark, SE1 0AE.

The Energy Advice Centre will also be running a pop-up surgery as part of Southwark Climate Day, which will take place at LSBU Hub Building on Saturday 11 March between 10am and 1pm.
