A message of support for Southwark's trans community following the tragic murder of Brianna Ghey
17 February 2023
Cllr Stephanie Cryan said on behalf of Southwark Council: “I am heartbroken by the murder of 16-year old Brianna Ghey over the weekend and I want to send my sincerest condolences to her friends and family at this difficult time.
"Our borough has a proud history of LGBTQ+ allyship, reflected in the fact that we have the forth largest lesbian, gay and bisexual community in the country, and the fifth largest trans community. I know so many of our residents will be feeling fearful, upset and concerned by Brianna’s murder, but there is support available so no-one in Southwark needs to feel alone. We are proud to continue to support the work of the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre, based in Southwark, who have opened their doors to all those who are seeking support at this difficult time. I also want to make sure that if you have been affected by this tragedy, you know that there are a range of organisations who can offer support, advice and information.
"This is especially crucial at a time when the trans community is experiencing unprecedented and growing prejudice and discrimination. It is worth reminding ourselves that this small portion of the population experiences disturbingly high levels of abuse and bigotry. One in four trans people have experienced homelessness. More than a quarter have faced domestic abuse. One in eight have been physically attacked at work, either by colleagues or customers. Almost half of trans people have considered taking their own life.
"Whilst the police have been careful not to speculate as to the motivations behind this callous crime, it is always right that we continue to support the trans community, and to express our ongoing solidarity and support LGBTQ+ residents in our borough and across the country.”
