Shop local in Southwark this December and win prizes with BetterPoints

13 December 2023

BetterPoints Southwark, an app that rewards people for walking, cycling or using public transport, is running a Shop Local campaign during December, with over £500 of local prizes to be won.

The app, supported by Southwark Council as part of its ambitious Streets for People strategy, was launched in July; since then, users have recorded 330,000 sustainable journeys, saving 138 tonnes of CO₂.

There are prizes from Bird & Blend Tea Co, Comptoir Gourmand, Nip Nip, Borough Market and Breadwinners, as well as BetterPoints to be won which can be spent at local businesses and charities. There are also daily bonuses for travelling sustainably to your local high street or market.

Cllr James McAsh, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency, Clean Air and Streets, said: “This is a great opportunity to win prizes from local businesses as you travel across our borough. With Christmas approaching, I would encourage everyone to make the most of our local high streets. By shopping local, especially if you walk, cycle or use public transport, you’re supporting local traders, while at the same time helping improve the air in Southwark by keeping traffic low.”

To join in, download the free BetterPoints app and use it to record journeys made on foot, by bike, in a wheelchair, or by bus and train. Green and healthy trips earn BetterPoints, which can be spent at participating local businesses, or donated to local charities. Regular drivers can use the app to help them switch any shorter trips that can be made by other means.
