Southwark Council takes back leisure centre management in less than two months

24 April 2023

The excitement is building as Southwark Council takes back the management of its leisure centres on 21 June 2023. Putting residents and staff at the heart of everything it does is a key priority for the council as it prepares for the handover of services from Everyone Active, its current contractor.

The teams are in place and working hard to make sure things will be as seamless as possible for leisure centre users. Existing members will be contacted soon about the handover, with reassurance that memberships and direct debits will remain in place, providing ongoing access to the leisure centres, and to share what to expect from the council-run centres.

Cllr Catherine Rose, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Parks, Streets and Clean Air said: “We would like to thank Everyone Active for running our leisure centres over the last seven years and we look forward to working with current members and residents to develop a wider leisure offer that maximises opportunities for people to access the centres and prioritises health and wellbeing, in the coming months, after we have transferred services on 21 June.

"We look forward to welcoming Everyone Active employees to Southwark Council and sharing our vision and commitment to delivering high quality facilities with greater accessibility for everyone within the borough.

"You’ve recently told us you want the leisure centres to be for everyone to stay fit and healthy, but that you also want to be able to enjoy the spaces for social connections with friends and family. Our new in-house teams are looking forward to developing the centres over the years ahead.”

After the initial settling-in period, the council will be injecting investment into the centres to upgrade gym equipment, bolster the class offering and develop services and has exciting plans for a brand new leisure centre in Canada Water by 2025. A new website and App will be launched prior to the handover on 21 June.

Existing members, clubs and stakeholders will be contacted in the coming weeks with further information on these exciting changes. In the meantime, if you’d like to keep up to date with the latest news and offers you can sign up for our mailing list
