Celebrations in Camberwell for new state-of-the-art care home

21 March 2022

With building works now complete, Southwark Council and Country Court are proud to unveil Southwark’s newest Nursing Home right in the heart of the borough.

Due to open this May, Camberwell Lodge Nursing Home will offer a mix of residential, nursing and dementia care.

The development of Camberwell Lodge, formerly known as Burgess Park, has increased the number of beds available from 60 to nearly 100. All rooms come with private en-suite, walk-in shower rooms. There are numerous communal lounge and dining areas, roof terrace and themed activity spaces. Floors are linked by a central common space, allowing natural light to flood through.

In line with council requirements, Camberwell Lodge’s building is rated as BREEAM excellent. This means it is considered as the best in practice for sustainable building design, helping the council to tackle its emissions and become carbon neutral by 2030.

Green measures are central to the building’s design. Its energy strategy will help lower water and energy use, cut carbon emissions which contribute to the greenhouse effect, and keep running costs down compared to a standard design. Where energy and heat is needed, the building will use low carbon technologies like solar panels, a combined heat and power boiler, and an air source heat pump. These will keep residents warm and safe, while also saving carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere and reducing reliance on gas.

Cllr Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “I’m delighted that we are well underway with building this top class nursing home for Southwark residents. Camberwell Lodge will provide the high-quality home and support some of our most vulnerable residents need, while also being a sustainable, energy-efficient building that is fit for the future. It’s been designed from the ground up to be a light, welcoming place where residents will feel safe and supported to live a healthy, active life, including those living with dementia. I very much look forward to visiting again in a few months’ time to meet residents and their families when they move in.”

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “We know how important it is that people with care needs stay in their communities, near family and friends wherever possible. We are delighted this new nursing home will enable more residents to do just that. Country Court is an established care provider with a strong track record in the sector. We look forward to working with them for the benefit of Camberwell Lodge residents, where they can expect high-quality care in the heart of the community.”

David Hicks, Estates Director at Country Court, said: “We are very excited to celebrate the topping out at Camberwell Lodge. This represents the culmination of many months of hard work and together with our colleagues at Southwark Council, we are looking forward to welcoming the first residents to our home in May. The excellent environmental credentials and innovative design makes this a ground-breaking project, whilst reflecting our usual family and community-led approach to care.”

The opening of Camberwell Lodge is part of the council’s commitment to open new nursing homes as set out in the Borough Plan 20-22. The council’s work to reduce health inequality and support vulnerable residents to lead healthy, active lives is further strengthened by their new Residential Care Charter – the first of its kind anywhere in the country. The Charter will drive up standards for care workers in all residential care homes within Southwark, leading to better working conditions and better quality of care for the most vulnerable residents within the community.
