Ten new family-sized council houses completed in South Bermondsey

14 October 2021

Building works are now complete on 10 spacious, family-sized council homes in Welsford Street, South Bermondsey.

Southwark Council redeveloped a car park and set of garages to build four two-bedroom, two-storey houses and six four-bedroom, three-storey houses. The houses, which will all be let at council rent levels, have the capacity to house up to 64 people. One of the houses is a specially adapted wheelchair unit.

Southwark Council has one of the most ambitious council homes building programmes in London, aiming to deliver or start construction on 2,500 new council homes across the borough by May 2022.

Every house at Welsford Street has its own spacious, private garden and there is also a small pocket park outside the development which was created to preserve the three large Norwegian Maple trees at the site.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, said, “I’m truly blown away by these fantastic new houses which will made wonderful homes for families in housing need in the area. I know that these spacious, high-quality houses with picturesque gardens will be loved by those who move in and will provide the ideal homes for local families to raise their children.”

The houses use air source heat pumps to provide heating and hot water. This is a low carbon, energy efficient system which absorbs heat from the outside air. This lowers the carbon footprint of the houses at the same time as reducing energy bills for residents.

Building contractors Bonds Builders handed over the development to Southwark Council on Thursday 14 October. The council will now begin the housing allocations process to let these new homes. All of the houses will be offered to local council tenants in housing need in the area, so they can continue to live near friends, family and the services they currently use.

Martin Ward, Surveying Director at Bonds Builders, said, ““Bonds Builders are proud to have worked closely with Southwark Council to deliver this high quality scheme in the most challenging times. The 10 houses on this site have been built to the highest standards and have been carefully designed to fit with the character of the local area. We are proud to hand over this site to Southwark Council to provide much-needed new homes for local families.”

Southwark Council will be hosting an opening ceremony to officially open the new houses and welcome new residents in the coming months.
