New council homes and commercial spaces planned for Rotherhithe

Southwark Council’s proposals to build 14 new council homes and two new commercial spaces at 213 - 219 Rotherhithe New Road in Rotherhithe have been granted planning permission.

The existing site is a two-storey temporary accommodation unit which will be redeveloped to provide brand new council homes in a part five, part six-storey building with balconies, bicycle parking and refuse stores.

This development is one of many which Southwark Council is working on across the borough to deliver much-needed accommodation for local residents.

The council has committed to building 11,000 new council by 2043, with 2,500 of these started on site or delivered by 2022.

To meet this challenge the council is looking at new and innovative ways to build more council homes, including by creating new homes on existing estates, on top of existing blocks, as part of other developers’ schemes, and by converting garages and disused areas.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, said: “I’m thrilled that this development has been given the go-ahead from planning to provide much-needed new council homes for our residents.

“The two commercial units being built here will be flexible use, providing a variety of opportunities for local businesses and giving a boost to the local area.

“These new council homes, like all of our new developments, will be of high-quality design and will provide the safe, secure, truly affordable housing that our residents need and deserve.”

Building works are expected to start on site in spring 2022 and the development is expected to be completed a year later, in spring 2023.
