Number of families offered a primary school place of their preference by Southwark Council is highest ever recorded

19 April 2021

The council received a total of 2,798 on-time primary applications for the September 2021 intake and has yet again been able to offer a primary school place to every applicant received on time.

2,765 (98.8%) Southwark families have received a primary school place of their preference - the highest number offered since records began in 2009.

Councillor Jasmine Ali, deputy leader and cabinet member for children, young people and education said: “This is very welcome good news after such a tough year for schools, parents and children. I am delighted that the vast majority of parents will be receiving the news they have been waiting for, and that the children can look forward to an exciting learning journey ahead of them in one of Southwark’s fantastic primary schools. I wish all the children every success and offer my sincere thanks to all the school and council staff who have worked so hard during the allocation process.”

Parents across London have until 30 April to reject their offer if it is not required. The council will continue to work with families up until the end of August to ensure that everyone receives an offer with which they are happy. The council continually reviews vacancies at Southwark primary schools as they arise, to ensure that as many families as possible are provided with a school of their preference for September 2021.
