Earlier this week, at Southwark’s Assembly, Cllr Kieron Williams was elected as Leader of the council. At the same time, he confirmed his new cabinet of nine who will join him to lead in their portfolios. As part of a cabinet which reflects Southwark’s ethnically diverse community, seven of the new cabinet portfolios are also now led by women, making the cabinet a majority female team.
This makes Southwark the borough with the highest percentage of women in its cabinet, in London.
The new cabinet includes Cllr Jasmine Ali, who will keep her children and education portfolio, but has taken a step up to become Deputy Leader. Cllr Jasmine Ali, Deputy Leader, said, “I am delighted that so many women are now joining to be in charge of these important areas of work for the local authority, it’s crucial that we lead by example when it comes to achieving fairness and equality, and I know this is one of the Leader’s main ambitions for the borough. I am really looking forward to taking on this key role, working with new cabinet members Helen, Catherine and Alice, and to continuing the great work with previous cabinet who have done such an excellent job already.”
The new cabinet names and portfolios are as follows:
- Cllr Kieron Williams, Leader of the Council
- Cllr Jasmine Ali, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Young People & Schools
