Southwark Council sends its response to TfL consultation on Bakerloo Line Extension – as the deadline looms for residents to have their say

Southwark Council has submitted its official response to the current TfL consultation on the Bakerloo line extension, emphasising again how essential the extension is to delivering new homes, jobs and opportunities for local people in Southwark and into Lewisham.
With London’s population expected to rise dramatically in coming decades and reach 10.8 million by 2041, Southwark Council firmly believes that investment in the extension and upgrade will be essential to accommodate growth across the capital, with the ‘new Bakerloo line’ connecting growth areas with capacity for over 100,000 new homes and 130,000 new jobs.
Cllr Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “The south-east of London has been woefully underserved by the Underground network for too long. We firmly believe the Bakerloo line extension is essential to the delivery of new homes, especially much-needed affordable housing, jobs and services that will make a real difference to people living and working in this part of Southwark, as well as bringing wider benefits to London and opening up new opportunities across the city and down into the south-east of London.”
Southwark Council, in partnership with Lewisham Council, launched the Back the Bakerloo campaign to encourage residents in both boroughs and across London to show their support for the extension, with over 20,600 people now signed up. The two councils have also led a wider coalition of London councils and business leaders who are working together to lobby for the extension, making a strong case for the huge opportunities it will bring across London. In response to TfL’s consultation on the Bakerloo line extension, the leaders of four London boroughs, London First and the Southeast London Chamber of Commerce have written to the Mayor of London to renew calls to secure the funding and powers to deliver the scheme.
Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham said: “The Bakerloo line extension would be revolutionary for Lewisham. It will cut journey times between Lewisham and central London with trains every 2-3 minutes, make it easier for our residents to get around and bring more businesses and jobs to Lewisham. The benefits of the Bakerloo line extension also stretch wider than just our borough, opening up direct links between northeast London with southeast London with all the jobs and economic benefits that brings.”
