Southwark schools make the grade in top architecture prizes

Albion Primary School has become the latest Southwark school to be recognised for its build quality and design.

The Rotherhithe primary school won ‘Best Educational Building’ at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building London Awards, the largest business to business awards in the building control sector.

Investment by Southwark Council  means that Albion can now accommodate more pupils after the school was completely rebuilt and modernised. Thanks to the addition of another storey to the school,  classrooms have been considerably expanded and have excellent acoustic and natural light levels to help every child get the most out of their day at school.

Southwark Council, architects and contractors worked closely with the school to help them design a school that worked for them and their needs.  This means that teachers now also have functional spaces, such as a dedicated storage area for books as well as break-out spaces that can be used for one-on-one learning and group activities.

This most recent award win follows on from three other Southwark schools achieving regional success in the Royal Institute of British Architects for the London architecture awards.

Charles Dickens School, Grange Primary School and Ivydale Primary School were all winners in the 2018 RIBA regional awards.

Bellenden Primary School and Keyworth Primary School also made the 2018 RIBA regional shortlist.

All of these schools are part of an extensive borough-wide investment programme to create 4,000 additional places.

The council’s commitment to quality in design was also recognised in the Building Design 2018 Architect of the Year Awards where Southwark Council was awarded ‘Client of the Year’.

To be recognised by not just one but three industry award bodies is truly a great achievement and a huge endorsement of the quality of our school buildings.

“Across the programme there has been a real focus on functional, quality design; the architects and building contractors involved on these projects have provided a lasting legacy that will make a real difference to our residents lives.

“Southwark Council has led the way in investing in the quantity of spaces we need for current and future generation attending our schools.”
