Southwark’s LGBT exhibition goes on the road

19 June 2018

A popular exhibition that celebrates Southwark’s LGBT History and people will be going on the road this month with two outreach events.

The Southwark QueerStory exhibition was displayed at Peckham Levels earlier this year for LGBT History Month and has proven very popular with visitors. The exhibition delves into the Southwark Archives to uncover a world of queer culture and forgotten stories throughout the decades, from the 1930s to the 2000s.

Now, Southwark’s Libraries and Archive Service, who put together the exhibition, has arranged for two, free, special events to take these stories around the borough:

  • Southwark Queerstory at Sexuality Lates

Science Museum, (Flight Gallery, Level 3), Exhibition Road, London, SW7 2DD. Wednesday 27 June 2018, 6.45pm to 10.00pm

  • Southwark Queerstory at Uniqlo Lates

Tate Modern (4th floor mezzanine, Blavatnik Building), London, SE1 9TG. Friday 29 June 2018, 6.00pm to 10.00pm

The Tate Modern event in particular will also feature a new film projection screening throughout the evening with unseen images from Southwark’s LGBT collections and a soundtrack from Peckham-based musician Rina Mushonga. There will be a pop-up archive where visitors will be able to look through items themselves and leaf through photograph albums and newsletters of Southwark’s LGBT campaign and community groups, and there will also be an opportunity to “add your own queer story“ to the archive through an Instagram collaboration with Queerstory London.

Cllr Peter John, Leader of the Council, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for people to learn about, and celebrate, the long and important history of the LGBT+ communities in Southwark and the impact they had on the national stage, paving the way for LGBT equality.”

The exhibition has been curated by Southwark Council Heritage Officer Chris Scales and is supported by the Southwark LGBT Network.
