Southwark Council invests £2.45million to bring a brand new adventure play building, public playground and outdoor adventure play, to the families who make Mint Street Park their back garden. Local people joined Cllr Rebecca Lury, Cabinet Member for culture, leisure, equalities and communities, to celebrate the opening of their brand new playground, 20 July.
The council is celebrating #LoveParksWeek with the opening of two outstanding play facilities, both at Mint Street and Peckham Rye Parks (16 July). Tanner Street Park will also soon be flying its newly awarded Green Flag, bringing the borough’s total up to 29.
Mint Street Adventure Play area has always been extremely popular with local families, so when it began to look tired a campaign by the local community resulted in the council stepping in, to bring a brand new, custom made, public play area and adventure play building to the park.
Local people were involved in the project from the very beginning and provided invaluable input into the design of both the building and the layout of the playgrounds.
The new adventure play building rises two and an half stories as the first floor now offers two climbing walls. There are three main areas of outdoor space around the building, including a brand new public playground that incorporates a new adventurous climbing structure, swings and slides, a secure central area, which features space for children to grow their own plants and herbs and a new specially designed adventure playground, featuring a central tower with a slide, aerial walkways and numerous Tarzan swings.
Cllr Rebecca Lury said: “I want to thank people for their help in bringing this playground about and their patience while the work was being completed. The opening of this exciting new facility contributes to the council’s commitment to make sure that people in every area of the borough have access to a top quality children’s play area.
“I am delighted to be here to open this remarkable new play facility, just in time for the summer holidays, when I am sure it will bring local children much joy.”
