The River Thames has been a focal point for South East England for over 2,000 years and plays a significant part in the history and development of the region.
The river is a main artery running through the heart of London carrying both commercial and leisure marine traffic. There are a large amount of vessels transiting up and down the river as well as across from one bank to the other.
The range of vessels is bewildering ranging from large ocean cruise liners and major warships to kayaks, sailing dinghy's and a multitude of vessels in between. Speeds range from a sedate rowing pace to high speed ferries and RIBS doing up to 30 knots.
Safety is paramount and any vessel transiting the river should make themselves aware of the local regulations and traffic rules.
The Port of London Authority (PLA) is responsible for the operation and management of the tidal river with the Environment agency being responsible for the Thames Barrier.
