Electrical testing of council homes
As part of our commitment to improve council housing in the borough, we have been carrying out a review of our services to check we are doing everything possible to help keep homes safe and well-maintained.
That review has identified the need to carry out a large programme of electrical tests across many of our council properties, so we are meeting our duties as a landlord.
As a landlord we are responsible for carrying out these tests, which are called Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR). While hundreds of EICRs have been done, we will be writing to council tenants to let them know when and if we need to do these tests in their properties.
While this programme is underway, tenants should continue to take the usual care when using electrical appliances and devices in their homes.
We know for many tenants they may not have had the best service from the council in the past, but this programme of work is one part of the wide-ranging action we are taking to improve our council homes and services to tenants. This has included:
- setting up a new tenant-led repairs improvement board
- damp and mould service
- rolling repairs actions days on estates
- appointing new leadership in the housing department
To make sure we are getting outside oversight of our work to carry out electrical tests we have referred ourselves to – and will be working closely with - the Regulator for Social Housing (RSH). This independent organisation is responsible for setting standards and driving improvements in the social housing sector.
