Aylesbury redevelopment
We’re building new homes and community facilities to replace the existing Aylesbury estate in Walworth.
This is part of our commitment to ensure good homes are available throughout Southwark.
We’re also building a new library, new community centres, a new health centre and early years facility and great new public spaces, squares and play parks.
The new homes are being built with our development partner, Notting Hill Genesis housing association (NHG). Some of the first new homes to be built will be council homes; managed and rented by Southwark Council. Others will be mixed tenure homes (social rent, shared ownership) which will be managed by NHG and some will be homes to own outright. The new homes will also include specialist housing for older people and for people with learning difficulties.
In total, more than 4,200 new homes will be built (replacing around 2,700 original homes).
400 new homes have already been built (delivered by London and Quadrant) and a further 351 homes are now under construction on two sites. 229 of these will be council homes and should be ready by the end of 2021. We are also about to start building a further 352 new council homes which will be ready in 2024
We began rebuilding ten years ago (in 2010). We expect the entire redevelopment of the estate, which is being delivered in phases, will take another decade to complete.
