Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA)

Since 1 April 2013, every Health and Wellbeing Board (HWB) in England has held a statutory responsibility to publish and keep up to date a statement of the needs for pharmaceutical services of the population in its area, referred to as a Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA).

This PNA looks at the current provision of pharmaceutical services across Southwark and whether this meets the current and future needs of our local population. Any potential gaps in service delivery are identified and recommendations are made regarding how to address these.

This is the second PNA that has been undertaken by Southwark’s HWB, the first was published in 2015. This updated version will be ready for publication by 1 April 2018.

Decisions on whether to open new pharmacies are not made by the HWB. Pharmacies must submit a formal application to NHS England. The relevant NHS England Area Team will then review the application and decide if there is a need for a new pharmacy in the proposed location. When making the decision NHS England is required to refer to the local PNA.

In addition, the Local Authorities and Clinical Commissioning Groups can also use the PNA when commissioning services to meet local health needs and priorities.

Consultation

All PNA consultations must be open for a minimum of 60 days. The consultation for this PNA began on Friday 10 June and ended on Tuesday 9 August 2022We thank those who took the time to participate in the consultation and provide us with useful feedback.
