Social factors that influence health

Environment

Our health and wellbeing are strongly influenced by the environment in which we are born, grow, live, work and age.

Air pollution is a leading environmental risk factor for morbidity and premature mortality. Since 2003 most of Southwark has been declared an Air Quality Management Area indicating a high concentration of air pollution, which is unlikely to improve in the near future. The main sources of air pollution in Southwark are transport emissions with areas around busy roads particularly affected by high emissions. Air pollution-attributed mortality rates account for around 23 deaths per 100,000 Southwark population or around 72 deaths per year.

Southwark Public Health together with key partners and stakeholders has produced many documents identifying the local population needs. Please note that this list will be updated as and when the new information becomes available.
