Letters to the Mayflower

The Mayflower 400 team in Southampton commissioned SmokeSygnals to write a ‘letter to the Mayflower’. The Wampanoag people were invited to write a letter that either reflected to 1620 or gave their opinion on how we can live well together as a community today.

This commission was inspired by a letter, addressed to the Mayflower passengers from their pastor, John Robinson, who was still in Leiden, which was read to them before they departed from Southampton, in 1620.

Why don’t you write a letter to the Mayflower passengers? What would you want to say about their voyage? About living well as a community? About understanding and living with people who might be different? Email your letter or film to mayflower400@southampton.gov.uk. A range of the most interesting will be posted on their social media channels.

Settlement - an indigenous digital occupation

Settlement is a digital based programme featuring art, performance, discussion and social interaction from key artists Indigenous to North America and the Pacific. The programme showcases creative works that question the impacts of colonisation on a wide number of tribal nations that continue to thrive despite its long-term effects.

Featuring up to 30 artists Indigenous to North America and the Pacific, it is designed as a creative response and claiming of digital space to consider the impacts of colonisation on a diverse number of tribal nations who continue to thrive despite its long-term effects.

All aboard the Mayflower living history pack

The Grand Theatre of Lemmings has created a project bringing together comedy and song to tell the tale of Christopher Jones, a local hero, and how he took the Pilgrim Fathers to America in a tiny over-crowded sailing ship.

The project combines a series of films with accompanying lesson plans, specially designed for junior school children.
