Employment and business theme
In the employment and business theme, we are working to ensure that:
Supporting people from all backgrounds to access quality employment opportunities including apprenticeships, internships, careers information, advice and guidance
We have reviewed ‘Southwark Works’, the council’s employment service, to better understand to what extent it supports people from all of Southwark’s diverse communities. An initial review found that over 80% of people accessing the service were from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds, and almost 85% of the people who were supported into work represented the diversity of the people that live in Southwark.
We have now looked at the data in more detail and found that when compared against the average for all ethnic backgrounds, someone from one of the 9 ethnic backgrounds that Southwark Works clients most commonly identify with, is, on the whole, equally likely to access training, start a job and keep the job for 6 months.
This suggests that Southwark Works provides consistent service to all, no matter their ethnic background.
Our next step will be to listen to the people supported by Southwark Works to understand their experiences of their work and types of jobs so that we can continue to improve the service.
Explore how we can provide effective business support, which is accessible to small and medium enterprises owned by people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds. This will focus on accessing finance and developing networks and mentoring opportunities
We have launched a business resilience support service to support businesses to build resilience and self-sustain as covid-related government funding has drawn to a close.
367 local businesses helped design the service by telling us what support they needed most to help them survive in the current climate. 56% of these businesses identified as minority ethnic-led so the service has been designed with their views at the heart of it.
The service is now open for applications. The views of the businesses we heard from will continue to shape future services as we develop a programme of longer-term support for our local businesses.
