Let's talk about: new council homes for Southwark

Let's talk about: housing

For the past year, an independent Housing Commission chaired by nationally acclaimed housing lawyer Jan Luba QC, has been looking at the future prospects of council housing in Southwark. Their final report was received by the leader, Cllr Peter John, in October 2012.

Southwark’s independent Housing Commission's task was to propose innovative, but deliverable, long term ideas to respond to issues created by the unprecedented demand for council housing. Last year the Commission met with tenants, leaseholders, other residents, housing associations and all those involved and interested in providing housing across the Southwark.

Councillor Peter John, leader of Southwark Council, said: "The council is wholly committed to council housing provision. In line with this commitment, and demonstrating the importance we place on understanding the way forward, the council commissioned an independent report, the findings of which are now public. "We wanted to see hard facts and the Commission has given us this. We acknowledge the importance of continuing to improve and we understand the legacy of past decisions, but our priority is the future.”

What happens next

We want to involve all those who have an interest in the future of housing provision in Southwark to have their say, in a way that is open, transparent and easily understood for all. So look out for the community conversation about housing we will be starting in later on this month.

We'd like to urge everyone in Southwark, and indeed anyone who has something constructive to say about the future of council housing in England, to get involved in this once in a lifetime opportunity to shape housing policy for the next 30 years.

Everybody's view will count, be they a tenant or home owner so come and join us from the new year and tell us what you think.
