Let's talk about: ageing well

More about age friendly cities

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says an age-friendly community as one where "policies, services and structures related to the physical and social environment are designed to support and enable older people to 'age actively', that is, to live in security, enjoy good health, and continue to participate fully in society".

The WHO say there are eight essential features of an age-friendly city:

  • housing
  • social participation
  • respect and social inclusion
  • civic participation and employment
  • communication and information
  • community support and health services
  • outdoor spaces and buildings
  • transportation

We have already made a start on becoming more age-friendly through our work on being dementia-friendly and the New Southwark Plan and Housing Strategy. Join our community conversation so we can make Southwark a place where everyone can live well.
