Childminders
How many children will there be with a childminder
Depending on their circumstances, the maximum number of children a childminder can be registered to care for is six children under eight years, including the childminder's own children. No more than three of the six children can be under the age of five years. This will be stated on the childminder's registration document.
In certain circumstances approved by Ofsted, childminders may be registered to care for two children under one year, as long as they can show that they can meet the varying needs of all the children being cared for and that they can provide continuity of care. Looking after brothers and sisters or twins may be such an exception.
Childminders can also care for children over eight years of age provided this does not adversely affect the younger children's care.
Childminders who work with an assistant may look after larger groups of children.
