Communal waste services - information for property managers
FAQs
- I need more bins than the form calculates.
There is an opportunity on the application form to adjust the calculations and explain why. We do not normally allow additional refuse bins but there is no limit to recycling bins.
- Can I just have free recycling bins? I have bought my own refuse bins.
No, unfortunately we can only provide recycling bins free of charge if you have a bin hire contract for refuse.
- How do I know what bins I need and how many?
The bin hire application will automatically calculate this for you.
- Is recycling compulsory?
Yes it is.
- Can the bins be placed on the pavement or roadside?
No, all bins must be kept securely within the property boundaries.
- Can we have food waste collections?
Some communal properties already have food waste collections. We expect to expand this service before 2025 to include all households, including communal collections.
- What cannot be put in the refuse bins?
- furniture and large items
- rubble and construction waste
- hazardous waste
- electrical equipment
- batteries
- liquids.
- Can we arrange collections of large items?
Individual residents can book a bulky waste collection online. Removal of any fly tipping of large items will be the responsibility of the property manager.
- How am I invoiced for the bin hire?
An invoice will be sent annually.
- Can I terminate my contract for bin hire if I decide to buy my own bins?
Yes, we will need a minimum of 4 weeks’ notice.
- What happens if I no longer manage a site?
You will need to inform us immediately and provide details of the new managing agent. You will still be liable for bills if we are not advised.
- How can I contact the Waste Management Team?
You can contact the waste management service at waste.management@southwark.gov.uk.
