School Streets
School Street schemes offer a proactive solution for school communities to tackle air pollution, poor health and road danger reduction. A School Streets scheme will encourage a healthier lifestyle and active travel to school for families and lead to a better environment for everyone.
How it works
A School Street is where one or more roads (or a part of a road) near a school entrance are temporarily close to motor traffic at the beginning and end of the school day, creating a pedestrian and cycle only zone.
The schemes are enforced using number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras. The cameras are placed at the entrance to the road within the School Streets zone. Any vehicles that enter the road during the restriction times that do not have a School Streets permit will be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).
All of our School Streets operate Monday to Friday during term times.
Check our list of School Street locations and operating times.

What's next and how to get in touch
Since we introduced the programme back in 2018, we now have 25 School Streets schemes in place across Southwark intending to get at least three new schools signed up each year. Where School Streets haven’t been practical in some locations, we have done work to improve access with wider footways for walking, cycling and scooting outside 11 of the schools in the borough.
The existing School Street schemes have shown that enlisting the full involvement of the school and community is key to success.
We will continue to work closely with our schools to actively campaign on improving road safety and air quality, while also reporting road safety concerns in their school area. We will be assessing schools based on criteria that consider their location and whether they are on a low or medium traffic route.
If you are interested in your school taking part in the Southwark School Streets programme, email highways@southwark.gov.uk.
