Streetspace overview
Streetspace refers to a programme of traffic reduction schemes that encourage active travel and re-purpose streets for the community.
As a borough, we strive to achieve the following aims through the way we manage our Highways:
- improve road safety
- reduce carbon emissions to help tackle the climate emergency
- make walking and cycling an enjoyable, safe and easy way to get around
- reduce inequalities in health and wellbeing
- reduce the amount of cut-through traffic
- reduce parking pressure for local residents
- encourage people to shop locally to support businesses and reduce car use
- improve air quality and reduce pollution and noise levels
- make more space on our pavements for social distancing to help keep everyone safe from COVID-19
The Streetspace schemes in the borough are:
- Dulwich Village, East Dulwich and Champion Hill
- Walworth
- Bermondsey Street
- East Faraday
- North Peckham
- Brunswick Park
- Great Suffolk Street
- Peckham Rye
The schemes mainly consist of modal filters, which help to reduce traffic on certain streets in the borough and help to create a network of healthy streets.
The Streetspace schemes were introduced using Experimental Traffic Orders allowing the measures to be monitored and consulted on in real-time. The schemes were subject to an extensive review and decision-making process to determine whether they're made permanent, amended or removed. Further information on the outcome of the reviews can be found on the individual project pages.
