Windsor Walk

Windsor Walk: Denmark Hill accessibility improvement

Background information

Network Rail met with officers from Southwark Council to inform them of their plans to provide a new station entrance on Windsor Walk in 2019. Southwark Council welcomed this improvement and committed to making walking and cycling easier to and from the station. The new entrance on the north side was opened in 2021.

Windsor Walk is a stretch of highway connecting Denmark Hill station to Kings College Hospital and the South London and Maudsley Hospital. It is a key access route to both hospitals. The section on the bridge adjacent to the pub and café was closed to motor vehicles for structural reasons several years ago. This road closure created an opportunity to improve accessibility to the station and increase space for people walking and cycling.

Objectives

The objectives of this scheme are to improve access to and from Denmark Hill station and encourage people walking and cycling.

This project is divided into two phases:

  1. Phase one will focus on rearranging the current bridge layout to simplify the environment to create more space for pedestrians, cyclists, and potentially for the pub, café and the fruit and vegetable market stall.
  2. Phase two will increase accessibility by widening the footway from the bridge to the new station entrance on Windsor Walk.

Project updates

Approval has been given to implement measures on Windsor Walk.

Street works started on 9 October 2023 and will finish on 2 December 2023, subject to weather conditions and other factors. During the construction period, pedestrian and business access will be maintained.

Consultation

We consulted on the proposals to improve access to and from Denmark Hill station and to improve walking/wheeling and cycling on Windsor Walk in July and August 2022. We received 46 responses to the consultation. The majority of those who responded were residents of nearby roads or someone who travel to/ visit the area for leisure and shopping.

This feedback was then used to amend our proposals for approval by the Cabinet Member for Leisure, Parks, Streets and Clean Air.
