Sydenham Hill 20mph

We're proposing to make changes to Sydenham Hill to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for all road users by providing better facilities for walking, cycling and accessing public transport.

Our proposals for Sydenham Hill include traffic calming measures such as raised tables and carriageway narrowing, with the added benefit of improving pedestrian crossings, and introducing segregated cycle lanes and widening footways.

Scheme objectives

The aim of the scheme is to reduce the average speeds on Sydenham Hill and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.  

Project updates

Approval has been given to implement measures on Sydenham Hill. 

Street works started on 30 January 2023 and will finish on 29 July 2023, subject to weather conditions and other factors. Resurfacing works will commence in August 2023.

Consultation  

A review was conducted in 2015 and found that speeds in both directions were well above the 20mph speed limit. The average speed in both directions was above 25mph. The average northbound speed in the Southwark Council maintained section was 26mph and the average southbound speed was 24.8mph. More details can be found in the scoping report.

We consulted on the proposals to reduce vehicle speeds and improve pedestrian and cycling safety in February and March 2020. We invited feedback from those who use Sydenham Hill and those who live nearby. We received 123 responses to the consultation, which is an 11% response rate. Each of the measures was supported by the majority of those who responded.

This feedback was then used to amend our proposals for approval by the Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and the Climate Emergency.
