Parkhouse Street Local Development Study (LDS)
The purpose of this Parkhouse Street Local Development Study (LDS)
(PDF, 2.5mb), is to promote a design strategy for development for the Parkhouse Street area in order to co-ordinate developer activities and encourage a cohesive proposal across landownerships. Currently, there are 5 landowners known to be drawing up proposals for sites located within the Parkhouse Street Composite Site, and timescales are broadly in parallel so this is a unique opportunity to address wider and shared objectives and thereby affect a co-ordinated approach to development in the area.
The LDS sets out a strategic response to the Planning policy guidance that exists and is to be used as the basis for a discussion between the landowners. It should be noted that the LDS in itself has no statutory Planning status; it is, however, an agreed reference point for a cohesive design approach. Southwark has an aspiration to retain and develop the employment offer in the area, in order to cater for and grow creative businesses to support to local economy of Walworth and Camberwell.
As a location on the edge of the largest park in the borough, Burgess Park, there is an opportunity to develop more residential-led development in the area. At the same time, the immediately surrounding area is characterised by mid-rise residential buildings including terraces of houses. Development would need to be appropriate in terms of both scale and quality to factor in the edge of park profile of the site.
