Parking control measures for carparks in parks
Car park charges were introduced on Monday 24 February 2020. The car park charges are currently £2.50 per hour.
Background
We have introduced and amended our existing parking control measures in five parks that have off-street car parks, which includes charging £2.50 per hour for parking. On-going budget pressures mean that it has become necessary to find new ways of covering costs and maintaining the high standards in our parks.
We aim to prioritise park users over commuters and improve road safety and access to the parks; in particular, for vulnerable road users, Blue Badge holders will still have free and unlimited access. We also hope that other park users will adopt more sustainable modes of transport and that this will help to improve air quality for everyone in Southwark. The provision for bicycle parking is being increased and so far 13 new bike racks have been installed in Dulwich Park.
The changes are in line with the Mayor for London’s Transport Strategy which states that provision for car parking should be restricted. The Strategy aims for 80% of journeys to be made by public transport, walking or cycling - reducing car journeys in London by 3 million each day by 2041.
The five car parks affected are Burgess Park, Dulwich Park, Peckham Rye Park, Southwark Park and Honor Oak Recreation Ground. Implementation at Belair Park has been deferred until further notice.

We asked residents to share their views about the proposed locations, times and days of these parking control measures. A six-week consultation was held in April and May 2019.
View the results of the consultation in the Determination of Statutory Objections relating to parking control measures in Parks report.
In July 2019 the report’s recommendations were considered and approved, and the new parking control measures are being implemented, except in Belair Park car park which has been deferred until further notice.
