Southwark Council attends the UKREiiF Conference in Leeds

30 May 2024

Southwark Council attended the UKREiiF Conference in Leeds last week where it hosted an event, alongside Lewisham Council and Central London Forward. At the event, the Cabinet Member for New Homes and Sustainable Growth, Cllr Helen Dennis, called for the UK government to green light the funding for the delivery of the Bakerloo Line Upgrade & Extension project.

UKREiiF BLUE Event

With preparation work funded by Southwark Council already in construction at Elephant & Castle station and further funding approved to design more stations along the new line, an economic impact report commissioned earlier this year revealed that the project will unlock £1.5bn in national economic growth, accelerate the UK’s journey to net zero through sustainable travel with 150,000 additional public transport trips, support the delivery of 107,000 homes across the capital, and create 150,000 jobs across the UK supply chain.

Cllr Dennis was joined by other campaign leaders including:

  • Brenda Dacres, Mayor of Lewisham Council
  • Chris Porter, Transport Planning Manager at Transport for London
  • Roger Madelin CBE of British Land

To back the Bakerloo Line Upgrade & Extension project, share your support on social media using the hashtag #BacktheBakerloo and sign-up to the campaign’s BackTheBakerloo website to join the thousands who have already pledged their support for the project at www.backthebakerloo.org.uk.

The Bakerloo Line Upgrade & Extension economic impact report, ‘Moving London Forward’, was commissioned by Central London Forward – the partnership of the 12 central London boroughs – along with Lewisham Council and Southwark Council. It was carried out by Hatch – a consultancy specialising in transport and infrastructure. The full report can be found here.
