28 February 2024

Hundreds of students, staff and local residents, attended a Streets for People Bike Fair at King’s College on Tuesday 27 February, as part of the college’s Climate and Sustainability Week.

The event showcased all the cycle schemes available through Southwark Council as part of its Streets for People work - from free cycle training for all ages and abilities through to bike loans, security marking and more.

Since April 2023, the council has provided cycle training to over 5,000 adults and children. Also:

•       Over 3,000 people have signed up to the BetterPoints Southwark app, which rewards people for walking, cycling or taking public transport

•       214 people have taken up the Try before you bike loan scheme

•       73 bikes security marked as part of a series of events with the MET Police

Councillor James McAsh, Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency, Clean Air and Streets, said: “It’s great to be part of King’s climate and sustainability month. This is our first Streets for People Bike Fair, and it’s hopefully the first of many.

“Our Streets for People strategy sets out how we will make Southwark a clean, green and safe borough. We’re improving walking and cycling routes to schools; creating more opportunities to walk and cycle; investing in our community spaces making them safer, greener and more pleasant environments.”

Partners attending included: Community Cycle Works; MET Police; BetterPoints Southwark and Peddle my wheels.

Visitors to the event were also encouraged to complete the complete the borough-wide Streets for People survey, asking about the changes they would like to see in their neighbourhoods, such as more trees, green spaces, cycle hangars.
