Local Proclamation of King Charles III

9 September 2022

The “Proclamation” is the official announcement of the new monarch.

King Charles III will be formally proclaimed King at a historic Accession Council in an ancient ceremony at St James’s Palace on Saturday 10 September. The Proclamation will then be read the following day in cities, boroughs, districts and counties across the country.

In Southwark, the local proclamation will be on Sunday 11 September at Southwark Cathedral, London Bridge, SE1 9DA at 3pm (arrival from 2.30pm). The public is welcome to attend the short ceremony, alongside local dignitaries, although seating is limited.

As part of the National Proclamation of the new monarch, flags – including flags in Southwark – will be raised to full height from 11am on Saturday 10 September.

The flags will then be lowered at 4pm on Sunday 11 September. The flags will then remain at half-mast until the day after the funeral.
